ABOUT
Mayomi Basnayaka is a Sri Lankan contemporary artist. She was born in Saudi Arabia, raised in Japan, and was art and design educated in France. Being a citizen of everywhere and nowhere, her art reflects the complexities of multiculturalism. These ideas translate into her installation, performance art, and sculptural work by the subject of FOOD. Being the daughter of a Sri Lankan chef cooking Scandinavian cuisine, his battles between food and identity inspired her passion to explore and question our relationship with food. Interactive or visual, performance is at the core of her work, as seen in her collaborative thought-provoking dinners about climate change, to her solo food tools that enhance focus during the act of eating. Having been raised under conservative cultural and religious regimes, her work aims to question barriers around identity and encourages liberation from taboo associations between food, pleasure, and cultural identity.
